Why I Started This

I was diagnosed with diabetes around 2007 when I weighed over 290 pounds. Not long before that, I had just quit smoking after 30 years — and I thought my health would finally start improving.

Instead, things got scary fast.

I started losing weight quickly, but it wasn’t healthy. I felt weaker — like I was losing muscle, not fat. I was thirsty all the time and couldn’t drink enough water.

I begged my doctor for a finger-stick glucose test. The result was over 500 mg/dL. He laughed and said I didn’t have diabetes. He was wrong.

Around that same time, I lost my 29-year-old sister to cancer. That fear hit me hard. I remember looking at my 6-year-old son and wondering if I’d be around long enough to watch him grow up.

I tried fad diets. I’d lose weight, gain it back — usually with more. Over and over. Then I saw a simple photo of my wife and me, and it was a wake-up call. Not shame — clarity.

Today, my son is 25. I’ve lost over 130 pounds and my A1C is dramatically better. I’m still on the journey — but now I have a calm, sustainable approach that actually fits real life.
